Leyland National buses operated by Strathtay Scottish

When Strathtay Scottish Strathtay Scottish Omnibuses Limited was established in 1985 it inherited the eastern operations of Midland Scottish and the southern operations of Northern Scottish. Its fleet of 11 Leyland National 2 buses were also inherited from Northern Scottish and Midland Scottish.

Seven of the buses from Midland Scottish were of the long 11.6m variant with a single door and no roof pod (SN1: DMS20V; SN2: DMS21V; SN3: DMS22V; SN6: NLS986W; SN7: NLS987W; SN8: NLS988W; SN9: NLS989W). Two of the four buses from Northern Scottish were of the short 10.6m variant with a single door and no roof pod (SN4: GSO7V/KRS541V; SN5: GSO8V/KRS542V/PIL2755) with the final two being similar but with a roof pod (SN10: MSO 9W; SN11: MSO 11W).

Initially the Nationals were operated in the donor company's livery with fleet names changed to Strathtay Scottish. The first Strathtay livery applied was a blue roof and skirt with orange inbetween. Doors and wheels could be either blue or orange. In some cases wheel hubs and wheels ended up not matching. Bumpers could also be blue or black. Later a white stripe was added just below the windows and the doors and wheels generally became blue as well. However the application of fleetnames and other lettering tended to vary from one bus to another. The same also applied to the inconsistent application of the Scottish Bus Group's "Best Bus Around" branding. So, can there really be a truly correct version of the livery to reproduce?

Anyway, here's the details of the eleven Strathtay Scottish Leyland Nationals.

The side fleetnames use a much smaller saltire than normal.

There is no fleet number on the rear of the bus.

The wheels and hubs are a mixture of blue and orange.

The bumpers are painted black.

The "chimney" on the rear was one of many different methods tried to improve air input to the engine.

Notes

The first photograph shows the Midland Scottish livery with Strathtay fleetnames applied.

The second photograph shows the second version of the Strathtay livery but in later life with Northern Scottish fleetnames applied with the bumper back to being white (Strathtay's were black or blue). The white stripe below the windscreen is also deeper than used by Strathtay.

In both photographs the 'LEYLAND' lettering is missing from the grille.

Note the jump in body number from DMS21V (06697) to DMS22V (06699). It was, and still is, common for registrations not to be applied in the same body/chassis number sequence.

The second photograph shows the bus with new registration operating for Western Scottish.

Western Scottish changed the destination display on many of their Nationals to make them wider but less deep. This National's display has so far remained intact but has been masked and the first digit is of the less deep design. See the second photo of NLS989W for the fully modified destination box.

Northern Scottish had Nationals GSO1V-GSO8V. GSO5V/KRS539V survives.

There is no front fleetname or fleet number on the bus in the second photograph.

"Strathtay" is placed before the "Best Bus Around" branding with "Scottish" being applied after it on the roof. "Strathtay" appears to be much smaller than the "Scottish" section.

NLS986W-NLS989W and MSO11W had matching Strathtay fleet numbers (SN6-SN9 & SN11).

The full Strathtay Scottish is placed before "Best Bus Around" on the roof. "Strathtay" appears to be much smaller than the "Scottish" section.

The Strathtay Scottish fleetname on the side has been applied too high up in the white band. The saltire should be in the middle of the white band.

Once again a rogue orange wheel is teamed up with a blue hub.

NLS986W-NLS989W and MSO11W had matching Strathtay fleet numbers (SN6-SN9 & SN11).

Notes

NLS989W was the final new Leyland National 2 to be delivered to the Scottish Bus Group fleet.

The first photograph shows the Midland Scottish livery with Strathtay fleetnames applied on the side only. The front fleet name still shows "Midland Scottish" along with the Midland fleet number MPN37.

Western Scottish changed the destination display on many of their Nationals to make them wider but less deep. This National's display has been so altered. See the second photo of KRS542V for an unmodified Western destination box.

NLS989W is the only Strathtay Scottish Leyland National bus to survive. Sadly it has been converted to a mobile sales/exhibition unit making any future restoration much more complicated and expensive. Our attempts to contact the owner have so far failed.

NLS986W-NLS989W and MSO11W had matching Strathtay fleet numbers (SN6-SN9 & SN11).
